Feeling overwhelmed and unmotivated

Admitting you have a problem is the first step in recovery right? With that in mind, it’s confession time.  I’ve been feeling overwhelmed and unmotivated lately. I’m finding that working on my side projects is actually a lot harder than I thought! I still haven’t really got into my groove when it comes to the content of the9tothrive, and I’m finding that after a busy day I just don’t have the head space to sit down, focus, take in information and create. Also, there is just SO much information out there that I really want to read and action but it leaves me not knowing where to start, what to prioritise and feeling I am not doing enough.

Which leads me to my next problem….

Feeling stuck in a rut

I’ve been getting frustrated and annoyed with myself, feeling that I’m not moving forward, not being proactive or doing enough to get me closer to my dream. I’ve been going over the last couple of weeks in my head, thinking about content creation for this blog, and on reflection, it suddenly dawned on me that I have actually been doing things that have moved me forward!

Acknowledging my little wins

Ok, so I haven’t handed in my notice to my employer and booked a flight to some tropical destination quite yet, but I am still closer to my dreams than I was two weeks ago. This has given me such a boost and made me realise that I’ve been far too self-critical.

Here are a few of the things that I have been getting up to:

  • I’ve been decorating my apartment and have been spending a lot of evenings and weekends on it, which means that it will soon be rent-able and therefore enable me to go travelling.
  • I have had another clear out of clothes and random ‘stuff’ – the less you own the less there is to pack / store / chuck out when you move on!
  • I joined an accountability group through Location Rebel and we’ve had our first conference call. In fact this is probably the biggest reason I am sitting here typing this post – it’s good to know that I will have at least one thing to update the group on during our next call!

When you’re feeling overwhelmed

When you’re feeling overwhelmed and unmotivated, think about what little steps you have taken that have got you that bit closer to living the life of your dreams. And whatever it is, however small it may seem, be sure to celebrate it!

I’ll end this post on this. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember this reassuring quote from Martin Luther King…..

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step”

  1. Yes and yes : ) I think the little wins are just as important as the big ones. Mainly because there are often many more than we realize. I am thinking each time, I complete an action toward my dream, it is a win … because I am that much closer. Really, consistent effort is what delivers in the long run. I have learned this as an adult learner of Italian and of the Accordion. Plugging away for years, at both of these, I can see my progress over time, and it reminds me how satisfying progress from hard consistent effort can be. I also find, ironically that the more effort you put into a thing, the more you appreciate its success in the long run. Easy wins, don’t feel as significant somehow.
